We’re Taking the Hobbits to Isengard
A parallel watch-along for the people, creatures, captains, guides, gardeners, cooks, and nearly-invisible helpers who carry the story from one turning point to the next.
Use the continuous streaming clock as a guide; Blu-ray and DVD disc clocks follow the same film order and may drift by a few seconds.
Follow a perspective.
Choose one character for a film, or divide the table among a group. When an entry says “subcharacter,” look for the person who gets one line, one gesture, or one decision that changes the scene’s temperature.
The route is intentionally impressionistic: it marks key events, not every appearance. Pause when you want to talk, then return to the listed cue.
Everyone has a road.
| Perspective | Clock | Key event | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| I · The Fellowship of the Ring | |||
| Bilbo | 00:19 | The birthday speech | His performance of comfort, mischief, and vanishing gives the Shire its first fracture. |
| Gaffer Gamgee (subcharacter) | 00:26 | A garden, a warning, a neighbour’s eye | The ordinary social world keeps moving while the Ring’s story begins elsewhere. |
| Frodo | 00:35 | Leaving Bag End | Departure is staged as an errand before it becomes exile. |
| Farmer Maggot (subcharacter) | 00:45 | The shortcut and the mushrooms | On screen he is only a threat behind the crops; the hospitality he offers belongs to the book. |
| Aragorn | 01:00 | Strider in Bree | He is introduced as a rumor before he becomes a protector. |
| Arwen | 01:43 | The ford | Love, memory, and urgency turn pursuit into a threshold. |
| Legolas & Gimli | 02:48 | Lothlórien and the boats | Two different kinds of loyalty learn to travel together. |
| Boromir | 03:10 | The breaking of the Fellowship | His failure is also the last act of his defense of Merry and Pippin. |
| II · The Two Towers | |||
| Éomer | 00:14 | Exile from Rohan | His loyalty is treated as disobedience by a court losing its center. |
| Gríma Wormtongue | 00:21 | The poisoned counsel | Watch how proximity to power becomes a weapon. |
| Háma (subcharacter) | 00:28 | The door of Meduseld | A guard’s courtesy makes the crisis of a whole kingdom legible. |
| Treebeard | 01:27 | The Entmoot decides | “I am not altogether on anybody’s side” becomes a philosophy of attention. |
| Merry & Pippin | 02:11 | Treebeard turns toward Isengard | Legolas says the title line early in the film; here the hobbits make it true, and the small witnesses change the war. |
| Faramir | 02:29 | The forbidden pool | Mercy and duty argue inside a single captured moment. |
| III · The Return of the King | |||
| Déagol | 00:04 | The riverbank | One discovery creates a history larger than the discoverer can imagine. |
| Denethor | 01:31 | The meal in Minas Tirith | Private appetite and public command occupy the same frame. |
| Gothmog (subcharacter) | 02:12 | The siege turns | A face in the enemy ranks gives the assault a tactical rhythm. |
| Éowyn | 02:31 | The Witch-king | The prophecy holds, and turns: it is fulfilled by the one person it never accounted for. |
| Sam | 03:11 | The last climb | Care becomes physical labor, then a sentence that carries Frodo upward. |
| Rosie Cotton | 03:45 | The Green Dragon | The return is not an ending until an ordinary life makes room for it. |
